Summer Reading
Summer Reading Info For Students Entering Grades 6-12
The district is requiring all students entering grades 6-12 to complete a required summer reading assignment. Each student is being asked to read one book from their grade-specific list and complete a follow up activity (one-pager in grades 6-8, writing prompt in grades 9-12). The assignment will be graded.
In grades 6-8, reading lists align with the first thematic unit in each grade level to help build background knowledge and support comprehension. Students in grades 9-12 will be able to choose a title from the Reading Olympics High School Book List 2022. Students will be given the summer reading assignment in class during the week of 5/23. E-book and/or audio versions of several of the texts will be available for free via Mackin Library.
A hard copy of the assignment will be given to each student, posted to their English teacher's CANVAS page, and posted to the district website (see Educational Services tab).
The district is also sponsoring a social media campaign, #CASDLovesToRead22. The district is asking its students to show off the books that they love all summer long. For additional information, see the attached flyer.
The district is also challenging every K-8 student to meet their weekly unit target on Lexia at least 6 times over the summer to help maintain and/or improve reading skills. Students that meet this challenge will receive a special reward when they return to school in the fall. For additional information, see the attached flyer.
